Review: Marshall Stockwell II Portable Bluetooth Speaker
Marshall has a complete line of great sounding Bluetooth speakers. The Marshall Stockwell II Portable Bluetooth Speaker is exactly the speaker powerhouse you’ve come to expect from Marshall, but this time in a portable, rugged 2.76" (deep) x 6.34" (wide) x 7.09" (tall) 3.04 lb (1.38 kg) package. The speaker includes one 10 W Class D amplifier for the woofer and two 5 W Class D amplifiers for the tweeters, providing 80 dB SPL @ 1 m, which is surprisingly loud. In fact, I kept being pleasantly surprised by this tiny little speaker in its features and performance.
The speaker comes with a USB-A to USB-C charging cable, quick-start/legal guides, and a carrying strap. The carrying strap attaches to brass buttons like a guitar shoulder strap on the speaker sides. The strap itself is a black leather-like material on one side and a red velvet material on the inside.
Note that the speaker does not come with a charging brick. The speaker is powered by a built-in rechargeable Li-ion battery, which surprisingly provides more than 20 hours of playing time with a full 5-hour charge. The battery also supports a quick charge, providing 6 hours of play from a 20 minute charge.
The front and back of the speakers are protected by a metal grill, though only the front grill has the Marshall script logo. The speaker has an IPX4 water resistant rating, so it is protected from accidental splashes. Overall the speaker feels surprisingly rugged.
Top panel controls include a Bluetooth button for pairing, knobs for power/volume, bass, and treble, as well as a LED battery indicator. The knobs feel high quality and all the controls operate smoothly. Wireless connectivity supports Bluetooth 5.0, which allows you to connect up to about 30 feet away. You can pair multiple devices to the speaker at the same time, though only one device plays at a time, but it does allow you to switch audio sources easily and quickly.
Audio comes from both the front as well as the back of the speaker. Overall this speaker exceeded all my expectations. I also have the Marshall Woburn, Woburn II, and Stanmore II speakers–I love the great sound from these Marshall speakers and hoped to replicate this listening experience in the Stockwell II because of its portability. From the quality of the speaker components, the ruggedness of the speaker, and rich sound quality (that Marshall sound), all in a package I can carry with me in my bag, I couldn’t be happier.
