The Extech MA3110 Cat IV 3000A AC Clamp Meter is a portable meter with a flexible current and built-in multimeter. In the box you get the meter, two multimeter probes, two AA batteries, and a manual. The meter is comfortable to hold, with dimensions of 11.4" x 5.3" x 1.1."
The basic idea is that you can use the clamp to enclose a conductor in order to take AC current readings. For example, if you wanted to measure current draw of a household device, you could plug the device into a line splitter (not included) then enclose one side of the splitter with the meter.
The clamp has a diameter of 11" and the thickness of the clamp is 8mm. The LCD display shows true RMS AC current values in two ranges: 600A (max resolution 0.1A) and 3000A (max resolution 1A). The meter also records:
- AC voltage (6V, 60V, 600V, and 1000V),
- DC voltage (6V, 60V, 600V, and 1000V),
- Resistance (600 Ohm, 6k Ohm, 60k Ohm, 600k Ohm, 6M Ohm, and 60M Ohm),
- Capacitance (6nF, 60nF, 600nF, 6microF, 60microF, and 600microF),
- Diode/Continuity.
The Extech MA3110 Cat IV 3000A AC Clamp Meter is a well-built meter–the quality of the ABS plastic is high and the clamp lock mechanism feels solid. The additional multimeter functions are convenient, especially for when you are not on your bench, though this meter probably will not be good for your only multimeter. The only limitation I found is that the LCD display is not backlit–especially when not taking measurements on your bench, you may not always have the best lighting, so a backlit screen would have been a useful addition. All in all this is a quality AC clamp meter that I’m happy to use.
