At practice tonight Coach reminded us of the following saying:
Yard by yard, it’s hard
Inch by inch, it’s a cinch
The idea is that for any lofty goal you have set for yourself–and you should be setting lofty goals for yourself–it can get overwhelming thinking about all the things you have to do to reach that goal.
You can burn yourself out, or get injured, or get discouraged if you try to go too fast or do too much too quickly.
The key to success is to aim for that mountain peak, yes, but just focus on making that next step toward your goal. Nothing else matters except for making that next step.
Your focus is not moving forward a mile. Not a yard. Focus on moving toward your goal one inch.
And once you take that step, once you move forward one inch, focus all of your attention on taking another step. And so on, inch by inch, step by step.
And before you know it, you’ll have achieved your goal.
