Yesterday I had an unboxing of the new Canon EOS Rebel SL1 camera.
I filmed the unboxing with my beloved Lumix GF2, which is an absolutely fantastic travel camera.
Since I got the Canon SL1 for its video features AND because it’s the smallest and lightest DSLR currently available, I thought it would be interesting to compare the “micro four thirds” format Lumix GF2 with the compact Canon SL1 DSLR.
Note that I had to take pics with my Android phone—sorry if some of the pics aren’t as good as they could have been!
Here’s a comparison of the front:
Here’s a comparison of the rear:
Here’s a comparison of the top:
Here’s a comparison of the side:
While the Canon SL1 is certainly thicker and taller than the Lumix GF2, in the hand it does not feel a lot heavier than the Lumix.
To test this, I compared their weights:
Weight: body + battery + pancake lens
- Canon EOS Rebel SL1 = 535 grams
- Lumix GF2 = 420 grams
Weight: body only
- Canon EOS Rebel SL1 = 370 grams
- Lumix GF2 = 266 grams
Note that the Canon EOS Rebel T5i—without the battery and lens—weighs in at 525 grams.
So the Canon SL1 seems almost as portable as the Lumix GF2, with a lot more features.
Can’t wait to start taking pictures. Unfortunately, while Amazon sent me the camera, lens, and mic the next day, my memory card for the Canon SL1 is being shipped via snail mail. Which means I’ll have a bit of a wait before I’ll be able to use it…
