The Acurite Smart Weather Station is a 5-in-1 weather station that supports remote outside weather monitoring and includes a convenient web app. Included in the box is the display with power brick, one internet access point with ethernet cable and power brick, the weather station itself with mounting bracket/hardware, and instruction booklets for each.
The weather station includes a mounting bracket so you can attach the station to a wooden pole or deck support. The station includes five sensors: wind speed/direction, temperature, rainfall amount, barametric pressure, and humidity. Depending on the materials used to construct your house, wireless range is about 100 meters (330 feet). The station uses 4 AA alkaline or lithium batteries–I used lithium batteries to support temperature readings below -4 degrees Fahrenheit. Dimensions of the station are about 10.8 inches tall by 5.6 inches wide by 13.8 inches deep. Note that the station should point south (if you are in the northern hemisphere) so that the included solar cell panels will be able to power an internal aspirating fan to reduce solar radition heating, which results in a more accurate local temperature measurement. In fact, the instructions assume you are in the northern hemisphere, so just keep this in mind in case you are using this weather station in the southern hemisphere.
The display is meant to sit in the included tabletop stand or be mounted on a wall. The display itself is quite bright and shows a variety of weather information, including current and historical wind direction/speed, indoor/outdoor temperature and humidity, time, weather ticker, rainfall/heat/wind-chill/storm alerts, 12-24 hour weather forecast, barometric pressure, and more. There are also menu buttons to set up preferences. Thought the display runs on a power adapter, you can also power the display using 6 AA batteries.
The Internet Access Point allows your weather data to be accessible using the MyAccurite App or by viewing your myacurite.com account in a browser. The access point comes with a power adapter, though you can also install 3 AA batteries for battery backup.
The access point provides always-on internet access by connecting directly to your home network’s wifi access point with the included ethernet cable – the access point does not support 802.11.
The app provides current, historical, and forecast weather information from your weather station. This information is also available using a browser to log in to your myacurite.com account.
In all, I found the Acurite Smart Weather Station easy to set up and fun to use–I enjoy having very localized weather reports available just by glancing at the display or at my phone. This weather station supports five different sensors in one unit, and the battery backups for the display and access point allow for continued use in power-outage situations, which is often when having current weather information is most needed. In addition, the wireless capabilities help prevent cable clutter. Finally, the weather app allows for checking on weather information no matter where you are, so you can for example check on weather values and forecasts at your home when you are on travel, which can help give you peace of mind.
