Sometimes a fan is not just a fan.
In the case of the Dyson Pure Cool Air Purifying Tower Fan, in addition to generating a cooling breeze, the fan actually does quite a bit more. This oscillating fan contains an air purifier, air quality sensors, remote control, LCD display, WiFi, and an interface to smart home devices such as Amazon Alexa.
This fan is tall, standing at about 41.5", and weighs around 11 pounds with an 8.1 inch base diameter. The most striking feature of its appearance is that unlike typical fans, this Dyson fan has no spinning blades–there is no danger of children’s fingers or pet’s tails getting caught. Instead, air is blown from the perimeter of an oval white loop that sits on top of a silver base. This is an oscillating fan–the loop rotates up to 350 degrees, and the fan generates over 77 gallons per second of airflow in rooms up to about 290 square feet in size.
The silver base contains both activated Carbon filters to remove gases and glass HEPA filters that capture 99.97% of microscopic allergens and pollutants as small as 0.3 microns (unfortunately the filters are not washable). On the base there is also a power button and an LCD display. The LCD display shows fan settings and sensor values.
Air quality sensors allow you to monitor via the LCD screen readings of the following:
- Particulate matter (amount of particles up to 10 microns in size in the air–for example: smoke, bacteria, allergens, dust, mold spores, and pollen)
- Nitrogen dioxide and other oxidizing gases
- Volatile organic compounds, such as potentially harmful compounds in cleaning products, paints, and new furnishings
- Indoor temperature
- Indoor humidity
The remote control, curved to allow for easy storage on top of the fan, allows you to turn on/off the fan, turn on/off oscillation, change airflow speed (there are 10 airflow speed settings, and on setting 4 it was so quiet I could hear the refrigerator running over the sound of the fan), change forward/backward air flow, enable night-mode (night-mode uses a dimmed display and quiet fan speeds), and scroll through sensor readings visible on the LCD display. If you connect your fan to your home WiFi, you can also control your fan, see historical sensor readings, set a timer, and more via the free Dyson app. Also, if you connect your fan to Amazon Alexa, you can control the machine with voice commands.
All in all, this Dyson Pure Cool Air Purifying Tower Fan is more than just a fan. I especially liked the multiple ways I could control the fan (touch, remote, voice) as well as how good it looked in the room–this is far from one of those box fans that rumble and vibrate. The extra features of stylish design, air purification, oscillation, remote control, air quality monitoring, and Amazon Alexa control make this machine more of an essential element of any room. It’s really a fan for the modern age.
