I finally caught up with my guitar instructor after being away for a while and one of the songs he tasked me with is, “I Love Rock and Roll,” made famous by the Joan Jett and the Blackhearts release in 1982. The song was originally recorded and released in 1975 by Alan Merrill and Jake Hooker of Arrows. Joan Jett’s version however became a #1 hit and is judged to be one of the greatest guitar songs of all time.
This is also a song my wife loves, so that makes finding time to practice this song easier, as she’s happy to encourage me to play one of her favorites. It’s also evidently a favorite of our new puppy — she promptly grabbed the first sheet of music and ate parts of it.
Structurally the song is not that complicated, which is good for a beginning musician like me. My instructor tasked me with incorporating the iconic riff, which occurs nine times throughout the song, into my rhythm playing, so I’m getting rhythm plus lead experience with this song.
That’s good, especially since I get bonus points from the wife and puppy.
Everybody loves rock and roll.
