I recently showed you an unboxing video of the new Canon EOS Rebel SL1 camera, and compared its size to my old Lumix GF2.
Because I wanted to minimize the form factor of the Canon, I also got with the camera the new 40mm f/2.8 40mm EF STM pancake lens. At just 22mm thick, it is the smallest lens Canon has made, so it certainly fits the “minimal form factor” requirement. The STM means “stepper motor” and is supposed to make for silent focusing during movie recording.
So, how does it handle during movie recording and what do my critters think of it?
Here’s the video I took without an external mic using the Canon EF 40mm STM pancake lens:
Sorry the video is shaky — I didn’t have a stabilizer with me.
The motor is certainly audible in inside shots, and while it does tend to fade into the background outside, it is far from silent. However, using the built-in mic perhaps was asking too much.
I think next time I’ll test with an external microphone.
But the critters think the lens is just fine.
