Waterman Hemisphere Deluxe Fountain Pen: In Premium Gift Box

I recently reviewed the Waterman Hemisphere Fountain Pen and liked it so much I decided to try the Waterman Hemisphere Deluxe Fountain Pen, which is similar to the regular “Hemisphere” line except with an upgraded finish. I chose the “Light Grey Cracked” finish, which is a striking cracked metallic finish that looks even better than it does in the pictures. Other finishes in the Deluxe line include “Rose Wave” and “Blue Wave.”

Other aspects of the pen are the same as the regular Hemisphere–the Hemisphere Deluxe pen comes in a premium gift box along with one blue ink cartridge. The pen weighs about 13.7 grams; capped (with cartridge) the pen weighs about 21.5 grams. The tapered barrel is about 10.67 mm in diameter at its widest point. The cap posts with a compression fit, though the cap fits quite snuggly. The pen feels balanced unposted–posting the cap gives the pen a slight back weighting. However, posted is actually how I prefer to write with this pen. The pen is closed by clicking the cap into place. There are Waterman engravings on the stainless steel nib, clip, and barrel band.

Waterman Hemisphere Deluxe Fountain Pen: Comparison of Hemisphere Deluxe with Converter Hemisphere with Cartridge

I’m using cartridges in the regular Hemisphere but in the Hemisphere Deluxe I wanted to use the optional “Waterman S0112881 Convertor for Fountain Pens,” which is a reusable piston convertor that allows you to refill your pen using ink from a bottle instead of using the disposable cartridges. Just as a comparison, the picture shows the blue Hemisphere with a cartridge and the light gray cracked Hemisphere Deluxe with the convertor. Again, the convertor does not come with the pen, though it is relatively inexpensive and gives you access to a much wider variety of inks.

Out of the box the pen wrote very smoothly. Mine has a medium nib–I should point out that the Waterman Medium nib is a broad medium, so you will want to use a quality paper. In my Leuchtturm notebook the ink flowed smoothly and there was no feathering or bleeding.

All in all I am very happy with this Waterman Hemisphere Deluxe Fountain Pen. The Hemisphere line is a narrower, more elegant pen and the Deluxe version has a visually interesting finish. I find them easy to write with so they would make a great gift–for yourself or someone else.
